ELECTION TIME IS HERE AGAIN… THE QUESTION IS WHO SHOULD I VOTE FOR?????

Who Should I Vote For???

Around 8 years ago I wrote to BTKO and also Mr. Kiritsis stating…”‘That since arriving in Kardamena in 1981, on of the first words I learnt was “THA”… and so it went… we are going to build a new junior school, we are going to build a hall for Weddings and Christenings, we will build a new indoor gymnasium for the children…we will build a football pitch for the would be footballers, and on and on it went.

However, here we are 8 years later and 2 Mayors later and we still appear to be in the THA stage. Maybe there was no money to do all these things that were promised us.. However, nothing was done either about the loud music, pr’s outside all the bars, the awful Bar Crawls which I hate more than anything about Kardamena, where huge gangs of drunken tourists are paraded around the village singing and chanting, it give the worst impression of Kardamena.

The above would have not cost any money only people’s time, but none of the above seem to be anyone’s responsibility. It appears that the Tour Operators are allowed to run the village , what they say goes…

I could go on for pages but what is the point, but now my problem is…..

Will I be writing to you again in 8 years time, when my grandchildren start school complaining that there are only outside toilets in the junior school, most of which are the turkish style…SO MUCH HEALTHIER FOR THE CHILDREN – who are you trying to kid, we are now in the year 2010 in case no one had noticed.

I had to write to you on yet another occasion, when my daughter started High School and her classroom had been a storeroom the previous year, once again they had run out of classrooms due to the large amount of children starting school that year.

So back to my original question….WHO DO I VOTE FORE??

Because I have always lived in Kardamena I do not know anything about any of the candidates, but obviously I have heard the name MR KIRITSIS, over the last 4 years and it appears to me that most of the inhabitants of Kos are waiting for him to be voted in and

‘TURN WATER INTO WINE’…ie perform miracles.

Because I have worked at the airport for the last 29 years and have been surrounded by bus drivers and taxis drivers, as you can imagine I have HEARD good and bad about him so I need to know what are his pre election promises…

It is one thing to be Mayor of Kos Town which is a very rich and quite small town but a totally different thing to be Mayor of the whole Islland. Where will he, whoever is elected, start first…<

Obviously, we, in the village of Kardamena think it should be here, as we have soooooo many problems, that it would be a full time job for anyone, just trying to sort the most basic problems out, however, KEFALOS, MASTICHARI, TINGAKI, PYLI and the rest of the island will also be waiting with baited breath for him to start performing his miracles.

I guess pretty soon the candidates will be comming around the villages giving their pre election speeches but I hope if the come to Kardamena they will not start their speeches with the word THA, as I think this would drive me to absolute distraction. Policiticians must be made to be aware that they must keep promises they make.

Just one small example, I live on the road that leads to the Mitsis Group of Hotel and every day 100′s of buses and taxis use this road and it is very very narrow, there is not room for a bus and a car to pass, so my husband and daughters take their lives in their hands every day and buses and taxis pass by at the speed of light as they hurl along this road.

I, myself, only have a bicycle, but even then I have had to stop my bicycle and wait for the bus to pass me…. This road is now breaking away and in extreme bad repair due to the volume of coaches and huge lorrys that are back and forth feeing the group of All Inclusive Hotels which do not pay any economy whatsoever into our village. The coastal road is the same, in fact I would say it is in a worst state of repair. These were not build for heavy traffic, they were built for donkeys ..and no I am not joking. Who is going to repair them, has anyone actually been to see the damage these vehicles are doing?

DOES ANYONE CARE???

I was brought up in a small village in South Wales, not a town or city but a village, so when my husband was living and growing up in the three houses, just below Panayia, and was wiping his bottom with smooth pebbles and kitching a ride to school on a donkey, my school in Porthcawl, South Wales, had 6 inside toilets for boys and girls and showers so that we were able to shower after having our gymnastiki lesson!!!! so I know Greece has a lot to catch up.. but HELLO we are now in 2010, and whereas my school now has an inside swimming pool and language laboratory as well as science laboratories…. what do the schools here have…. so I go back to my original question…

WHO DO I VOTE FOR.
I am sure the whole British population of Kardamena are asking the same question….

With Kind Regards and good luck to the winner of the Elections, you have a very tough job in front of you.
I remain

Yours sincerely.
Christine Rogers Georgallis..

I agree with many of Christine’s comments. Kardamena is now at its lowest since I arrived here in 1992.
We have so much potential, it just needs someone to carry it through.
    Where do I start…..
    1. Outdoor toilets in Dimotiko school
    2. Poorly mintained beaches
    3. No public facilities – showers/changing rooms on the beaches
    4. PR’s outside of venues and also ‘collecting’ people from outside of accommodations
    5. Unsightly signs outside of businesses
    6. No maintenance of business or houses within the village
    7. General poor standard of accommodation on offer within the village, please note general. I have worked as a manager of a tour operator for the past 18 years and have been fortunate enough to work with a select few good units within the village
    8. Disgraceful playgrounds
    9. No seating or adequate lighting along the sea front roads
    10. Poor lighting within the village
    11. Limited pedestrianised areas within the village
    12. No suitable drop off zone for coaches in the village
    13. No taxi prices displayed at taxi rank
All above points can be remedied, however……I also await with baited breath

I attended the pre election meeting of Mr. Kiritsis in Kardamena, I was lucky enough to get into the tiny hall where it was held, think there was 50 chairs and about 200 people who turned up to see him….He was very overcome, and very enthusiastic, as of course, he is from the village of Kardamena, but he did not say anything that I have not heard from every candidate over the last 20 years, will he now have the money and power to actually fulful his promises remains to be seen. I met him very quickly after, and said I would not say anything, now, but will wait for 4 years to see what he actually manages to achieve. Apparently the law has now changed and it is now up to the Mayor, if he wants to build a school he does not have to wait for permission, let see what happens.
Also he wants to expand our Marina, and of course lots of talk about us having a sewerage system.
Any more comments from any more english ladies out there, to help me make my final decision on WHO TO VOTE FOR.
I think any party that gives some money to ARK which is some english people who are trying so hard to help the poor abandoned cats and dogs over the island, may win themselves some votes…so something to think about…I am not sure how many english residents there are on the island of Kos, but I know most of them try and do their best to help the animals…unfortunately the Greek residents of Kos are not so great on this. Something to think about all you Political Candidates…..
    Kind regards

Hi Christine I know that George has plans that have been approved for a complex, with full veterninary care, educational purposes etc etc for the care of strays on the island. He wants to work alongside the organisations such as Ark to run the place. I also believe he is the man that will do the things he says look at Kos, all that in a time of bad economy not when money was flowing in!! He is driven, passionate and believes in himself, ok does not make him the most popular person at times however, the improvement of the Island as a whole is his main concern not his popularity!! Get all the facts from everyone then make your decision if only everyone thought like you it would be a fairer election and not one on who has the biggest family or friends!!

I would just like to point out a few things about the current happenings in Kos over the last four year. I know personally that George did not do anything substantial to help the animals here in Kos Town I have been told from a few good sources that he/his party were approached many times regarding the issue of the animals and his response was to do nothing.

I could go on for ages talking about the lack of support in this area but I am not writing this for any other reason than to say do not believe everything you hear.

As for what he did in Kos! What he did was destroy many business’s and families incomes to make the town “look nice” all he is worried about is the visual side of Kos and not what is best for the residents of Kos. E.g. He made business’s take out outside bars, (which in some cases were their only suitable bars therefore they have been unable to work as a bar), he has made people take their roof down as well as screens to stop the wind and rain therefore making it impossible to work in the winter time (and everyone knows this is the hardest period for the business’).

But i have to mention that it seems that this rule was not for everyone???

I would also like to add that the work that has been done to make Kos town look pretty is of very poor quality and really it has been a waste of money as in a few years time it will all need replaced or fixed. Now you tell me if it is a good thing to spend money over and over again on something that should have been done properly in the first place??

George may be driven and passionate and I’m sure he does believe in himself but I do not believe that he is the right choice for mayor at all.

I believe that the choice of who to vote for should be made after talking with not only the foreign people in Kos town but also some of the local people who own business’

I understand that George is from Kardamana and that loyalties may be with him but ask yourself as stated above if it should be a fair election voting on proof and policies or if someone should be voted through family and so called friends?

Personally i feel that any of the other candidate party`s would be a safer choice as we have had proof already that George does not do the things he has promised.

Don’t take my word for it just ask people in Kos town.

Surely if you have a counter argument, then doing it anonymously removes some of the weight of your argument. If you want to convince people otherwise then stand up and be counted, it’s far too easy to complain and hide behind anonymity!

        Hi Carol,
Yes I agree if everyone did think like me it would be fairer…I am still doing a lot of research…so we will see….

Well I spoke to a very good friend of mine in Kos Town….and hopefully I am going to go and see him and have a further discussion….so am definately mulling over all the comments, please keep them comming…..if i cannot come to a decison then I will vote white, so I believe in doing this, my vote will go to the winning candidate, so maybe he will be the one that deserves it…maybe not quite the correct thing to do…..but have another two weeks to decide….I have noticed that over the years people do not vote for a certain party, but for a cousin twice removed..as it would be troppee not to…and this is what I definately do not want to do….will continue mulling…

I have heard disturbing things re the elections, people have been threatened, their businesses have been threatened if they decide to vote for Mr Kiritsis. How is this fair, how is this freedom of choice??? How sad is it that people have to resort to scare tactics in a time when people should have the freedom to decide for themselves, the freedom of choice, the freedom to look forward instead of back. It shows that these people are bullies!! They should be stood up to and not be intimidated by. If they can not play fairly then they should not play at all!! At the end of the day its the rest of the people who suffer as the right person will not be chosen. Kos deserves the best!!! If we all worked together instead of against each other can you imagine the possibilities, can you imagine the place that we could become. Anything is possible!!! SCARE TACTICS WILL NOT WORK!! FOr those of you that can vote do not be intimidated, do not be scared, stand up for what you believe is right. You will sleep better at night and hold your head up during the day. For those bullies out there, let the best man win fairly without these disgusting threats who do you think you are!!!

    • Julie

It is terrible what is going on in this election period. I agree any kind of scare tactics is unacceptable. People have a right to vote for whomever they choose and should not be afraid of what will happen before or after the elections.

where is all this information commng from, as I have not heard anything…

      • Kos2000

I have not heard anything either but it disturbs me the amount of money Kos has already received in grants and what has been done with the money. I personally have had some quite important visitors this year and they were horrified and saddened at the state of the Island. Villages left to go to ruin – the water mills left abandoned – the salt lakes in a disastrous state – the Archaelogical sites – the Hospital – the police (where are they) – rubbish everywhere – the state of the beaches – Kos Town like a building site – sewarge being pumped into the sea – to name but a few. They said that there are far more places in the world – a lot cheaper – perfectly clean – excellent education system – well looked after archaelogical sites – they actually compared Kos to being 3rd world. Sadly, as time goes on it is getting that way. Really it is very disappointing. Who to vote for – God knows I certainly do not.

  • Cjerram25

Bribing is immoral, however threatening lifes and property is worse, with a bribe you can say no, with the threats, such as setting fire to a car, you have no choices.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Christine-Rogers/590148130 Christine Rogers

gosh, arson bribery and violence, well I missed all that..what the hell is going on…would have thought as I am so undecisive about who I vote for someone would have come and tried to bribe me!!!!
Well if all this continues…maybe a lot of people will decide not to vote at all…
I myself, am not worried about illegal galivas, as we don’t have one, and not that worried about Fully Inclusive Hotels as they all come in and rent cars, but I am trying to be we instead of me…..well roll on next Sunday when it is all over and done with….and may the best man win, is all i can say.

I would like to find out why so many of the english and eu residents on the island are not registered to vote. Did you not know how to register? Your voice does count even if you are from the Uk, albania, holland, sweden, in fact any of the eu countries. Stand up and be counted and have your say. I believe that with us all voicing our opinions we can bring some new ideas and thoughts on how to run the island and how to be the best that we can be!!! What do people think??

Well, I was very keen to vote this time around but hadn’t been informed that I had to register before the end of August. If I had better information about the whole voting process then I would have been on the list. I’m sure many others like me didn’t know either.

      • Colinfromkos

It also begs the question that if (as we are now being told) our issues and ideas count, then why didn’t anyone think to tell the “foreign” community about the registration process?

        • Julie

I have to agree with you and that is part of the reason why Kos-explorer was started as I was furious that I had not been informed of the registration process until it was too late.

But I have to point out that there are parties out there who do listen even if you are unable to vote and they do welcome ideas and want everyone, including children and foreigners to give their ideas and opinions and I can say from personal experience that they do listen.

Hopefully we will all be prepared for the next elections, but if anyone does have any ideas don’t be shy and send them to us.

Hi, I am not a resident of Kos but I visit regularly in and out of season – as a ‘tourist’ I am always concerned that the main aspects of the Island that are in good repair are the ones that the outsiders see. I like to talk to local people in Zia, Tigaki, Mamari etc when I visit and they all say that although tourism brings in a good income the structure of the Island needs to be looked after in the long-run.

I am always sad when I travel between Tigaki and Kos Town and see that roads need resurfacing, I know this is caused by local traffic, but surely the holiday companies have a lot to answer for? Also I disagree with people using PR outside of clubs and tavernas – in fact it puts me off visiting those places after dark, and I’m only 26 years old!

If I was a resident of Kos I would vote for the party/person who dedicated most of the time and budget to listening to residents and fixing things that can be easily remedied e.g. school toilets, facilities for children’s sports, roads… and who put a strong effort into policing what the holiday companies can and can’t do.

I love the Island so much that I have a tattoo saying ‘Kos’ in Greek surrounded by butterflies… whenever anyone in the UK sees it they say “why have you got a holiday resort on your arm!?” I reply that I have been all over the Island and in fact I have only been to Kadamena once and that was to catch a ferry! I think it’s a shame that places such as Crete can get recognised for their agriculture/ produce as well as tourism, but Kos (whihs is SO historical with Ippocrates) gets a raw deal.

I hope to save enough money to live near Tigaki one day with my boyfriend, I hope that by then the mayor of the Island has begun to put in place a strong infrastructure for the local people and businesses.

Its great to hear from tourist to the Island, what they think and how they feel thank you for sharing that with us. I will pass on to the current Mayor of Kos town x

  • Georgallischristine

well sunday came and went and still no winner….still so much to mull over…problem is living in Kardamena, is rather like living in the Antartic….so goodness knows what it must be like in Kefalos….who and what can we belive…..

  • Georgallischristine

well here I am again…..I really thing that all this backstabbing should stop ….as far as I can make out both of the main candidates are PASOK, imagine what would be happening if one was Neo Demoncratia. Kosta, apparently was a very successful Mayor in Kos Town for 20 years, he then decided to move to Athens to continue his career in Politics, so I would imagine 20 years in Politics is enough for anyone..however, he has decided to run again….Beause he was so successful when George was voted in he found everything ready for him, money etc so he was able to go straight in and make all the changes that he has. I cannot understand why they are so against each other.
The thing I like about George is that he says what he means…exo apo ta dontia tou, which is something a successful Politician will have to learn not to do..most politicians says what they think we want to hear…We in Kardamena, certainly need someone who will do what he says he will do, as absolutely nothing has been done in the last 29 years..that is visible…sorry only the harbour….also we do not need a nice polite man, we need action not sweet words, that is not to say that Kosta will not do what he says he will do…as they both are going to do the same things…..sewerage system, school, hall, new roads etc and so forth…I just wonder how they are going to be able to do all this and yet for the last 29 years no one else has managed to do anything….all very confusing….anyway sunday is nearly here so once again..let the best man win…whoever he is….
