A Charity Event for Kos Kindness & The Church….
The event was held in Zipari at Yializis
Many shops and businesses (especially in Zipari) had helped raise awareness of this event in Kos and many contributed in some way or another, either by donating prizes for the raffle/lucky draw, or the actual food that was served, wine, etc.
The event was to help continue to support those families and individuals in need in Kos. There are many people living in poverty here in Kos at this current time, largely due to the austerity measures and economic crisis that has hit Greece very hard over the last few years. There are also several families that have had health problems and face large hospital bills, families that have lost loved ones and that are struggling to survive. Kos Kindness and The Church Organisation have collected clothes and household items and distributed them around the island to those that have needed them, they also help supply groceries and the necessities to many families that are living in poverty on a daily basis.
At Christmas time they were able to assist many families in need and put a smile on their faces with even gifts for the children too.
The recession has affected everyone in some way….however, it is good to see the spirit of kindness, not only at Christmas but everyday in Kos. As people on the island regardless of religion or nationality are reaching out and supporting each other in these difficult times, for some, very dark days indeed…which have now been made a little bit brighter!
Kos Kindness and The Church Organisation would like to thank everyone who attended last night, over 100 people joined in the evening and were served good food and wine and danced to the live music. Many raffle prizes were also won.
Special mention must go to Kerry Chorafiou Hebenstreit (a Brit Abroad) who has been the backbone of Kos Kindness and started the charity last year and has made a big difference on the island and given up her time and energy to helping others less fortunate. Kerry continues to raise awareness by helping to organise fund raising events, attending Car Boot Sales & Table Top Sales on behalf of Kos Kindness in order to buy groceries and items to deliver to those families that have nothing at all , and not only at Christmas, but throughout the year. Kerry has recently teamed up with the Church in Zipari and the organisation and together with the support of many others on the island they are now able to feed and clothe many that have lost their way….and have been caught up in the continued crisis here in Greece.
For many it is not over yet….in fact the situation for most of the people living in Greece is getting worse. Many families are without an income in the winter months here on the island and even for those that worked during the summer period, some are still yet to be paid or had their wages cut so much that they can no longer keep up with everyday living costs. It is good to know that Kos Kindness and The Church are able to help and are supported by so many.
