KOS HOSPITAL DYSFUNCTIONAL

KOS HOSPITAL DYSFUNCTIONALFROM:

The KY (Health Centre) Antimachia remains closed, while the hospital in Kos is dysfunctional! The public health system on our islands is beginning to resemble to third world conditions. The degradation, decline and retrogression of the most important and basic asset, and it seems to be degenerating. The descent continues and the governing bodies are provocatively indifferent.

The events taking place are unprecedented, as well as the incapability of the managers, as they offer no solutions. Cyclades: – Syros Hospital , for 48 hours, patients and their companions were left in the freezing cold due to lack of heating fuel! The staff handed out extra blankets due to the low temperatures prevailing on the island! Note; there are still shortages of staff, medicines and medical equipment.

 - Western Cyclades, the Health Centres (created with resources by the South Aegean Regional Operation Programme (PEP) during the period 2004-2009), remain without adequate staffing. Functioning haphazardly, attempting to patch up the problems. The transfer of a rural doctor from the Serifos,Sifno Medical Centre is one of the latest actions, illustrating the sloppiness of the administration.

 - Paros , is left with only one private pediatrician. The Medical Centre, despite protest from the local community remains without medical staff. – Amorgos, doctors are considered a luxury item in the Medical Centre. The nursing staff perform all and any necessary procedures.

Dodecanese: – Rhodes Hospital, the appointed governor of PASOK Mr. Michalis Kokkinos, resigns, confirming the disintegration in the health sector, due to the government policies which have been imposed. The promises by the governors for the proper functioning of the General Hospital of Rhodes, have once again, proved false.

- Kos, the Island of Hippocrates , the problems in the health sector expand. The hospital is dysfunctional. The Medical Centre of Antimachia, closed and ignored. Implementation date for the new hospital on the island, ignored. The situation is tragic for all the islands in our region, as well as the larger hospitals; Naxos, Karpathos , Kalymnos, Leros. But at the smallest hospitals, the abandonment is visible. In the meantime Mr. Loverdos, apparently, is dealing with the succession of the PASOK party… “It is prohibited to become ill on the islands, because you never know what you’ll find”. Finally…who will take the responsibility.

It is very sad that this Island (kos) and also others has such poor medical facilities. Not only for those of us living here but the worry is also for the tourists who arrive and expect that should they need medical attention they will be able to get good medical care. I wonder how the hospital here would cope if there was a major accident on the roads or at the airport...what major accident plans do they have ? if any. As a retired medical person living here I find it very worrying that there is such a lack of equipment , drugs and qualified medical to staff to cope on a day to day basis let alone a major incident..as the article states..who WILL take responsibility...and when ? after we have a major coach or air crash? Let us hope before that time comes some one will look and see that the need on the islands for good medical care is even greater than in the large cities where there is choice of doctors and hospitals..what choice do we have here..only to go to Athens or Rhodes for major problems.
