Today at appoximately 1.30 pm a fire which started in an old rubbish dump spread over the mountains and down towards houses and hotels in Kardamena.

The fire due to the 9 Beaufort winds also spread toward a military camp just on the out skirts of Kardamena,.

The hotels Aegean Village, Karda, Lagas and Mikropoli Hotel were evacuated and approx 1500 guests made their way down to the beach and village where restaurant owners supplied water and refuge.

Lagas Hotel has been damaged by the fire which causes problems as it is said that there is no alternative accommodation for the guests should they need it.

The smoke from the fire filled the sky and streets causing some people to be hospitalized with respiratory problems, no reports of other injury’s have been made.

The fire brigade worked tirelessly with the army and volunteers using the municipal machinery and 3 fire fighting aircraft from Kos and Rhodes.

The final news which was reported was that they placed sand around it (dug trenches) and contained the fire this way to allow it to burn itself out.
