People that YOU think deserve a mention …2012

For many of us that are living on the island of Kos we are hugely grateful for the work, support, courage, friendship, charity and commitment of others’   and we  feel that it is well worth giving the people that deserve a mention credit, a ‘pat on the back,’ a  gold star – or whatever you wish to call it…but let’s let them know that they are VERY much appreciated and have been noted for their contribution to this island!

The names are not in any particular order and  they have been sent in by readers of Kos-explorer Newswire and members of the Brits Abroad (Living in Kos) Group.

These are the people on the ‘good list’…..a few readers have suggested we should also have a naughty list too…or a ‘black’ list!

There are MANY people that might not be mentioned here that live on the island of Kos that do good deeds everyday, make us smile with their comments, go above and beyond their call of duty.  We would just like to say THANK YOU, far too many people for us to mention them all…….for  making the island a better and a happier place!

Carol Jerram – For her contribution and founding of Goodbye To Cancer.  A charity which has been set up in Kos and has enabled the hospital in  Kos  to have a new chemotherapy machine.  Although Carol no longer lives on the island, the charity and Carol’s support still continues as they hope to raise enough funds for a Oncologist Ward in Kos and a Hospice.
Carol should also be noted for her blog which gave an insight to many people of the difficulties facing those of us that chose to live abroad during this difficult time in Greece.

Also Eirini Papadimitriou – For Goodbye To Cancer, Michelle Stelletos, Veronica Street and Joyce Dramountanis

Susan McGrane – For her huge contribution towards helping the animals on the island with the charity Animal Rescue Kos. The Charity has re-homed many strays animals, nursed sick animals, organized sterilization programs and helped educate the general public on animal welfare and care.  Susan organizes fund raising events such as Car Boot Sales and much more.

Susan from Animal Rescue would like to mention and take this opportunity to thank Dave Firth, Dave Williams, Sarah Booth, Jessica Runner, Kayt Lysons, Julie Papaioannou, Dale & Tracy, Jeanne Isaacs, Astrid Schreuler, Hunde Breucke, and Giannis Frangoulis in the Mayor’s office – For all their help and support.

Kerry Chorafiou Hebenstreit    – For founding the charity Kos Kindness, for fund raising for Kos Kindness at Car Boot Sales and Table Top Sales, hours spent at the church sorting through clothes and her continual efforts to help those families and individuals in need in Kos. This Christmas alone they were able to make many families Christmas a happier one.

Nicky Williamson & Efi Manousaka For their help and support with Kos Kindness.

Rita Neske – For designing the Christmas Cards for Kos Kindness.

The Priest in Zipari – Pappa Giannis – For all that he does to help the families and individuals that are in need here in Kos.

Sandy and Dave Fletcher -  For all their help with the animals on the island.

Veronica Boland – For raising important environmental issues and starting the Group -Keep Kos Clean which organised clean up days on the island during 2012.  Also for Veronica’s involvement in the development and presentation of the animal welfare education program that has been introduced to schools in Kos.

Julie Finlay and Vasilis Pasparas for their websites which have kept the foreign community informed of local news, charity events, events and a whole lot more during 2012 and their contribution to tourism with the Travel Guide.

Emma Karanastsi, Michelle Stelletos, Debbie Minter & Donna Hatzizacharia for volunteering and helping to translate the Greek news into English for Kos-explorer.

Eileen and Brian Smith for helping to raise funds for Animal Rescue Ark in 2012 as well as helping with Kos Kindness.

Colin and Rita – For their help in caring for the animals at The Animal Rescue Kos site as well as Rita helping to promote the Animal Rescue Events with Posters and designing them for many other events too.

Melita (Lennox) Kantarzis – Ballerina’s & Dreams -  For giving children the opportunity to ‘dance’ and confidence in themselves.

Christine Rogers – For her contribution to tourism on the island by promoting  Kos on a regular basis on various forums, holiday websites, comments on newspaper articles etc..etc…

Sharon Memis was a very good friend to  a reader who was relocating.  Also Sharon is often called out to The Catholic Church when there has been electricity problems and various situations.  Sharon helps keep the Catholic Church and the grounds of the Church clean and well maintained.

Karen Williams would like to nominate her good friend Annette Weston who looks after and feeds most of the cats in Kefalos every day, what ever the weather and also really deserves a mention.

  • Monica H0gland- Meri –  For her contribution to the Bazaar and general organisational skills for events and outings.

Louise Amer – For her Mother & Toddler Group (and opening up her home so that Mother’s don’t feel alone!)

Alison Carne – For her fight against grafiti in Kos and raising awareness of various issues (including the Ryanair one and keeping us up to date).

Jo Oxton, Noel Duncan, Kathyrn Angelise  for organising  the petition for Ryanair and raising awareness of this situation on the island and abroad.

Minas Hatzimihail for all his efforts with the  airline Ryanair.

All those that helped at the Bazaars around the island and raised money for special causes, schools and committees.

Joyce Dramountanis    – For often being ‘the voice’ for Kefalos and promoting the village as well as being involved in helping raise money for local schools in Kefalos.

Bernadette Briggs – For her contribution to local Kardamena teams & committees.

AND THE WINNER GOES TO ……….. ALL OF YOU!  CONGRATULATIONS FOR MAKING KOS A BETTER PLACE WITH YOU ON IT!!!

Another message sent to The Kosexplorer Team  stated ‘all of us living here deserve a medal’…..!!!

  • Joyce “The Voice”

I feel as though the island has gotten smaller and the community has grown closer over the last couple of years. Thanks for your kinds words and thoughts. Thank you to everyone who has supported the events and charities around the island. FYI Kefalos is only a 45 minute drive from Kos Town. We have great beaches if you visit in the summer and some nice coffee bars are open in the village if you visit in the winter!
