PLANS FOR THE TOWN… ARE TAKING SHAPE???
Mr Theodosis Nikitaras Vice Mayor and Civil Engineer, recently spoke out on Kos Councils plans for developing and improving the Town Center.
These plans have been talked about for quite some time:-
They will include parking, lighting, and making the bicycle paths continuous, and proper walk ways on the beach areas around the town. Also addressing the problems outside schools for parking, by having allotted residential parking areas and disallowing parking on the pavements, and in dangerous places.
It was stated in the local newspaper, (The Vima of Kos) on the 15th March that work would commence within a few days… and it has!
Although, some plans take time and are still under discussion…
For example:- there are plans to introduce a walk way/pavement along the beach from behind The Electricity Board (DEH) and where all the restaurants and shops are, right up the beach until Barbayianni.
They also hope to continue the bicycle road from where it stops suddenly outside of Special Bakery… to take it past Nero/Avra and The Tourist Information Office in Town. It is still however being decided, and discussed on how to do this, either by roadside or beach side. They have been considering a wooden walking/cycling path (as in Rhodes), on the beach.
As far as lighting and parking goes:- The council stated that there will be more lighting around the the area of the Metropolis (opposite Avra), which has already been introduced, and better lighting still to be put in place. This region of The Metropolis Square (close to Bar Street)and through the Old City Walls in particular was mentioned. Lighting in this area will enhance the beauty of this island, and make it safer for those walking at night too.
Parking restriction areas have also already been implemented and there is now a row of irremovable cones outside the Gymnasium (High School in Kos Town) and in several other places.
So… work is in progress… and slowly plans are starting to take form.
