Hydro-biological Station Of Rhodes
If you are walking around the seaside of Rhodes Town, on the furthest edge (past the Casino, and continue walking), you will find the building that houses the Aquarium, which is open all year round. Head behind the building and down the steps, and you will find the entrance.
The Aquarium is a favourite especially for the children, as they can delve and explore the magical sea world. Walk through the tunnel which feels like you are in an underground cave. Discover the beauty of marine life up close, and personnel, and read the informative information of each specie that is displayed.
There are huge fish with giant googly eyes, some with many colours, others that come so close that you just want to reach out and touch then the glass….but you musn’t! Also flash cameras are forbidden (they distress the fish).
There is also a museum area, which displays restorated bodies and bones of sharks and whales, with very large teeth! There are cabinets that are full of different and very interesting sealife, and the history of the discovery of the items can be read to.
Rhodes is developing their scientific knowledge on marine environment and conservation, and is carrying out research programmes, organising specialised lectures, educating the general public and Rhodes strives to be active in rescue and rehabilitation of endangered species, or of distressed marine life.
They offer training to post graduate students from foreign universities, and are forever raising issues and awareness (and in schools) when it comes to environment issues and protection of seal life.
So, enjoy and support this wonderful centre of marine exploration! In a building that has been declared a Historic Heritage Monument!
