SOS – KOS AIRPORT
Kos Airport slightly resembles with the legend of ‘the boy who cried wolf’.
For years now we have been shouting that the engine of tourism (and other) traffic for the island, our Airport, suffers in many things, to such a degree that it causes great distress, defamation and misery to all travellers, but also potential dangers, which should have been dealt with many years ago. The condition of the airport has been declared imcompetent and insufficient for many years now, due to the rapid growth.
Once, our politicians had addressed the issue, and even reached to the point of the studies, but…that was over 10 years ago.
EVERYTHING GOT STUCK WITH THE FUNDING!!!
In other words, everything is ready for the NEW terminals (4000 sqm) but until now, (although it is an outdated project), NOBODY is bursting to commence, even now with the ESPA programme; the last European programme, meaning….OUR LAST CHANCE.
But who is responsible for this basic of decisions….. of our local leaders (MPs, Mayors, Region, etc.)?
Don’t they see that for years we have become a parody, with 2 and 3 hours flight delays (and more!!).
Don’t they see it’s been 5 years since they revoked the contractor for the 2 new aeroplane parking spaces (to increase flights, due to the huge demand) the project has stalled, although the money is there!
WHO WILL PUSH FORWARD FOR THIS?
Don’t they see the endless queues at extra-Schengen; Russians, Israelis and others intra-Schengen, suffering and distressed every time, every year, and many twice a year?
Even the existing runway has seen better days, presently with serious problems, and God only knows how it’s still functioning. The runway has several points just “shouting” for general maintenance.
And let’s just say the problem will “pop” up in the winter.
If things go wrong this summer season….what a nightmare!
But who will actually deal with such a hot issue?
It has been many years now, high priority, the need to create a backup plan for any emergency “situation”, but even with this issue they all drag their heels…
Finally, there is the issue of staffing (CAA, Police, etc). It is convenient for us to say that Kos was the leader in 2011 for arrivals.
But this fattened cow, when it’s neglected and forgotten, will one day run out of milk (unless it dies first …).
Bitter truths…. but we have a duty to once again highlight them…..and may the good Lord illuminate our politicians to run THERE NOW, before it’s too LATE!

Surely the first opinion of a holiday is arriving at the airport, if tourists are put off by Kos Airport when arriving and departing, then they are surely not going to revisit. Money spent on the new duty free, to the cost of adequate seating areas is sadly not going to encourage visitors. Such a shame when people are trying so hard to encourage tourists, that an ageing inadequate airport will certainly be the downfall of Kos. Tourist numbers may be up for this year, but many will not want to return. Someone has to take responsibility.
