Quick round up of some of today’s local news….
A fire broke out in the Norida Beach area of Kardamena this afternoon at around 1pm causing headline news. The fire was soon maintained by the local Fire Department of Kos. Fire fighters remain in the area, keeping an eye on things!
An accident occurred at around 6pm this evening close to the Ilios Hotel on the road from Tigaki leading to Marmari. Two tourists were taken to hospital, reports from local news stations state that there were no serious injuries.
Hold your noses! A stench yesterday in Mastihari once again had local businesses in the area signing petitions and on the phones to the local council. There are many rumors as to the cause of the foul smell, although it is still under investigation. The drains in several areas also seem to be blocked!
Meanwhile the smell around the town and in the other villages around the island today was not exactly sweet! Piles and piles of rubbish lay in the streets waiting to be collected. The warm summer sun beating down on it making the odor of decay even worse as the day went on! Tourists arriving at the harbour today, were appalled and their first impressions were of disgust at the mountains of rubbish & empty boxes that met their eyes!
With the current situation in Greece as the economic crisis thickens, and talks of further redundancies and cutbacks, local council workers are on strike. The tourists may look on in disgust but who will pay to put food on their table they ask?
